Maritime English Language

Course description

Symbiotics have developed this maritime English course for masters, officers and watch personnel on seagoing shipping.

The course has been developed to introduce maritime and technical vocabulary, functional language and grammatical structures to enhance mariners’ abilities to communicate internationally.  

We will help candidates acquire a minimum achievement of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Level 4 from a starting level of 2.5, or a Level 6 from a starting level of 4.5.  This equates to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) B1 and B2.

Course objectives

At the end of the course candidates will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an ability to use English grammatical structures to communicate a desired message correctly.
  • Use specific vocabulary in a maritime context including understanding the terminology relating to safe navigation, life on board, jobs and roles, parts of ship, health and safety, sea survival, firefighting and conditions at sea.
  • Use English language to convey information relating to maritime situations and events, including safety and weather conditions at sea.
  • Convey messaging using the International Phonetic Alphabet.
  • The course is designed to improve the English language ability of sailors and it covers all topic areas included in the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) programme.


Course duration

Course duration is dependent on the student and their individual objectives. The course comprises 4 one-week modules.
